[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign. [00:00:03] Speaker B: The following program is brought to you in living color on elliot gazette.com or wherever you get your podcast. The Gazette News Group presents the Parting Shots Podcast. Now here's your host, Gazette News Group sports editor Ken Shot. Thank you Scott Geezy, and welcome to the Parting Shots podcast, available wherever you get your podcast. Subscribe today. Thanks for joining me from the Parting Shots Podcast studio in Schenectady, New York. And if it's Wednesday, it means it's time for Union men's head hockey. Josh Algy joining me here on the podcast. Josh, how's it going? [00:00:40] Speaker A: It's good. Back. Good to be back in the swing of things. [00:00:42] Speaker B: Yeah, it's great to have you back in case week two of our third season of doing this. And of course Union opened its season last Saturday against Army West Point. The game ended in a one one tie shootout took place at the end of overtime and army won that two nothing. I'll discuss my thoughts on the shootouts in non conference games a little later. But first, Josh, let me ask you about the excitement and the atmosphere for the team's first game at MT Bank Center. What was it like and did it meet your expectations? [00:01:09] Speaker A: Yeah, I think it met our expectations. It was, it was a lot of fun. It was a great crowd, a ton of energy in the building. I think there was a lot of buildup, a lot of, a lot more nerves for a, you know, a home opener than maybe you would expect even. I think our veteran players that are used to everything kind of came out with their eyes wide open and you know, give army credit. I thought they took the first 10 minutes, they were the better team. [00:01:34] Speaker B: I think the one complaint I've been hearing from fans is the noise. I know you want to have noise and be able to use that as an advantage against your opponent, but the problem is I think it's so loud people are complaining they can't hear about the announcements from the PA announcer. You have an arena host now. It's sometimes screams at the top of his lungs and it's tough to understand them. Is there anything that the college can do about the noise situation? [00:02:01] Speaker A: Yeah, I know that, that, that has been, you know, a complaint of some people and you know, we've, you know, I guess one I asking everybody give us a little bit of leeway here and a little patience as we try to get it sorted out. I know they are trying to get the people that put the sound system in to come back and try to help to just correct it because there's certain areas where it is clear. Like, on the bench, you can kind of hear it, but then, you know, in the stands, it's. It sounds bad in certain areas. So, you know, you know, it's more important that the fans can hear that stuff. And I know the school's doing everything in their power to get it corrected and, you know, including, you know, talking to, you know, the host to, hey, this is, you know, you don't need to scream here. Like, it's loud enough. So I think that stuff will get corrected. [00:02:44] Speaker B: Yeah, I mean. I mean, they probably did some testing with the sound. Of course, there was nobody in the arena when they did it. And now with, you know, you have 2200 people in there, makes a big difference in trying to understand. But as you said, I mean, it's. Everybody's trying to get their, you know, work their way through this, and hopefully before the end of the season, they get it fixed. [00:03:02] Speaker A: Yeah. And I think the one thing you can make, you know, you can promise is that the athletic department is gonna do everything in their power to make sure it's the best experience for the fans possible. And that's including, like, listening to some criticism and, you know, trying to correct it. Cause, you know, they've done a lot for us to have this great of a building and how, like, we have to. Obviously, everybody misses Mesa, but, like, this is our new home and we gotta make it ours. And so whether it's not perfect for you as a fan, we're gonna try everything in our power to make it per. But give us a little bit of break and give the building a chance. [00:03:35] Speaker B: And I don't miss certain things. I miss about messa. Some things. I don't like the bathroom parking. I don't think people have any complaints about that. Concession stands, too. Well, let's get into the game. That first period, you mentioned it, Union looked like it was trying to find its game. And meanwhile, Army West Point looked crisper. They did play an exhibition game the night before against liu. I mean, how tough was that early stages of the first period? [00:04:03] Speaker A: Yeah, they. They were, you know, coming out with a team that had a little bit of experience and, you know, you knew they would be a little bit ahead because of that and. But I felt like we were standing around watching a little bit. Didn't seem really connected. And, you know, I think, you know, thankfully we were able to weather the storm a little bit, but, you know, eventually, like, they were able to get that first one and, you know, that was. That was a little bit frustrating for us. [00:04:29] Speaker B: Well, Union got a power play less than four minutes into the game, but didn't do anything with it. And we'll talk more about the power play in a bit. Then army gets its first power play when Lucas Buzziol is called for cross checking at 11:44. 27 seconds later, Parker Lindauer is called for boarding. So army has a two man advantage for 133. Union kills off the buzzy old penalty and we're eight seconds away from killing off the Lindauer penalty. But a top of the slot wrist shot by Lucas McCluskey found its way past Cameron Corpy to give Army a one nothing lead. I mean how frustrating is that? You're so close to killing off that the end up two man advantage. [00:05:04] Speaker A: Yeah, and I thought there was a lot of sacrifice and you know, guys blocking shots, doing whatever it took to kill that five on three so you feel like you're in a really good spot and then unfortunately kind of a seeing eye shot gets through and you know, it is a bit of a backbreaker because you have all the momentum there. If you kill that off and then you know, they sort of get one and you know, you're all excited about the five on three kill and then they get one. [00:05:30] Speaker B: I think the new sports information director for Union, Tim Luca mentioned there was eight blocks during that time and I think Nick Young had three of them. [00:05:38] Speaker A: Yeah, and that's something he takes a ton of pride in as a leader for us and you know, for us to be really successful, he's going to have to be tough to play against and physical and that was a firsthand, you know, example of what he can do well. [00:05:51] Speaker B: As the game progressed, Union started getting more and more opportunities. There were moments when the players had one timers, but either the players shank the shots or missed the net. What must be done to maybe be a little more accurate and not shank the shots as well? [00:06:04] Speaker A: Yeah, I think, you know, we've talked about it all week here is just making sure we get the puck on net. You know, a couple even sticks broke where it's you know, just a little bit of, just the way, the way the bounces went for us. But you know, we got a lot of talent in that locker room and you know, you get enough opportunities like that, they'll be finishing them here, know in no time. And it's just, you know, game speed's a little bit different than practice speed. And I think the guys saw that. [00:06:33] Speaker B: You almost wish they had wooden sticks again. I don't think they would break as Much as these composite sticks do. [00:06:38] Speaker A: Yeah, they, I, I know our guys like, like what they use, but there are times as you know, somebody who grew up with a wooden stick, it's like, ah, it'd be nice if, if they'd be a little more durable. [00:06:48] Speaker B: How expensive are those composite sticks, by the way? [00:06:51] Speaker A: Yeah, I mean, if you're, if you're buying one, you know, just at, at the hockey store, you're spending 300 bucks. [00:06:57] Speaker B: Oh, man. Man. Yikes. Okay. [00:07:00] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:07:02] Speaker B: Well, you had six power play opportunities in the game. The team had nine shots on go on those power plays, but not one of them hit the back of the net. And they happy with the chances, but frustrated that nothing went in. [00:07:13] Speaker A: Yeah, I, you know, I thought we had some really good looks. I thought we had the right people with the puck on their stick that usually, you know, like I said, if they get another opportunity against Mercyhurst, I think they'll finish those chances. And yeah, it was frustrating, but at the same point, you know, give army credit and, you know, we gotta, we gotta bear down a little bit more and just find a way. [00:07:32] Speaker B: Well, the score is one, remains one, Nothing going into the third period. And midway through that third, Union finally strikes. Lindauer intercepts an army clearing pass along the left wing boards. He sends the puck to the net. Connor Smith is skating to the net and he has this stick about chest high, and he redirects the puck past goalie JJ Cataldo to tie it. I mean, talk about the play, which started with actually Colby MacArthur behind the army net with his forecheck. [00:07:56] Speaker A: Yeah, so we do a nice job. We had a. They were set up in their control forecheck. We end up exiting and getting, getting, getting out with our control breakout and just sort of get the puck behind the net. And Colby does a really nice job putting pressure on there D, who forces a pass, and Parker's there to pick it off and he throws it on net and Connor gets to the net and just right on top of the crease and is able to deflect it in. And we really needed it at that point. [00:08:23] Speaker B: Well, I'm watching a video of the goal from the Zamboni corner on Union Athletics Instagram page. It looked like the puck caught a piece of an army defender before Smith got it. I mean, to me, that makes the goal even more remarkable. [00:08:36] Speaker A: Yeah, those are really tough plays. Skating and having to stop and tip a puck. So if it got deflected as well, that's really nice play by Connor. [00:08:44] Speaker B: And of course, Connor, we'll mention That a little bit. But yeah, he's one goal. We'll get a bit ask. Yeah, no, we'll talk about this because it's his second goal career goal. Both have come against Army. He scored the other one last year against Army. So what do you got to do to get him to score rather than Army? [00:09:04] Speaker A: Connor's going to score goals for us. He has that kind of ability. You know, last year, you know, he gets his first one in his first game and you know, I think he, you know, had some learning experiences on just how hard it is to score and he had a really good, you know, training in the off season. I think he's ready for, you know, to have a, have a good breakout year this year for us. So good start for him. But yeah, like he's, he's just got to play with confidence and I think getting, you know, the summer and having some time. He's coming back with, you know, a great outlook on it and looking for big things from him. [00:09:37] Speaker B: If I recall, during the skills competition that you had with the women's team, was he the fastest skater for the men? [00:09:43] Speaker A: Yep, he was our fastest skater. Definitely someone who can get up and down the sheet quick and you know, I, I want to be surprised if he gets a couple breakaways this season. [00:09:51] Speaker B: Yeah, well, the game goes to overtime. Neither team scores. So it ends in a 11 tie. And while the real game was over the I'm going to be editorial comment here, the meaningless shootout took place and army won that 2 0. The reason I say it's meaningless because there aren't any standings points being decided. I probably asked you this question a million times when I ask again, why do we need the shootout in the non conference game? [00:10:15] Speaker A: It. It's just. I don't know, at some point someone, if someone gets hurt on it, like they'll go away. I think they do it for the fans and probably just for the, you know, hopefully that the home team's fans can win so they can go home a little happier. I don't know. But at the end of the day it counts as a tie whether you win it or not. So yeah, it's one of those things that you don't really know why we. [00:10:35] Speaker B: Do it and it doesn't really affect what now the NPI is called. Right. [00:10:39] Speaker A: Right. No bearing on anything. It is pointless. [00:10:43] Speaker B: Well, I had to see two shootouts on Saturday because the women's game against America went to a shootout and the women lost by the same two. Nothing scores. But. Well, let's take A break. We'll talk more with Josh when we return. I'll also have post game interviews with Connor Smith and Parker Lindauer and we'll preview Union's two game series at Mercyhurst this weekend. You're listening to the Parting Shots podcast. [00:11:10] Speaker C: It's the most historic conference in college hockey. It's a battle night in and night out. ECAC Hockey, an iconic conference, home to 12 of the most prestigious universities and programs in the world and showcasing the best student athletes in the sport. Top notch facilities and arenas, incomparable traditions, passionate fans, alumni who go on to become elite professionals, leaders and champions. ECAC hockey. There's no experience like it. [00:12:23] Speaker E: Hi, this is Union College hockey alum Adam Prasinsk. [00:12:26] Speaker B: You're listening to the Parting Shot podcast with Daily Gazette sports editor Ken Shot. Welcome back to the podcast. I'm Gazette news group editor Ken Shot and I'm joined by Union men's head hockey coach Josh Haugy. Well, let's hear from Union players Connor Smith and Parker Lindauer after Saturday's game. And Parker will get a little animated when I asked him about the shootout. If it's needed in non conference games, guys, find out the result you want it, guys. Probably not the result you wanted, but what was, what was the excitement level like as this game went on in the new building? Your first game? [00:13:14] Speaker F: I mean we've kind of been waiting since the summer, you know, for this one night. We knew it was going to be rowdy and packed. Super excited to break in the new place, show the fans like what we have here and what they've given us. I mean we wouldn't be in this position without you guys and the fans and all of our sponsors, donors, Garnet Blades. So the excitement level for us was high all week. We were really excited for this game and you know, maybe like we were too excited in the beginning of the game. [00:13:45] Speaker B: Kyle, can that be contributed to maybe the slow start you guys had in the first third? [00:13:51] Speaker E: Yeah, I mean, I feel like we had a lot of energy, pressure. We just were a little sloppy. We didn't really, you know, do what. [00:13:58] Speaker F: We had to do. [00:13:58] Speaker E: And I mean, that's what happens when you don't start on time. Yeah, it was a nice play. I mean, just kind of stuck my stick out there and luckily it hit it. [00:14:13] Speaker F: What was that moment like when, you know, it does hit the back of the net? You guys get to celebrate the first. [00:14:18] Speaker E: Goal in the and it's like a surreal. It was super loud. I mean. Yeah, I mean I kind of blacked out, so I couldn't really tell you. [00:14:27] Speaker B: Your second career goal. Both of them have to come capable come against Army West Point. Are you. What do you like about scoring against Army West Point? I don't know. [00:14:36] Speaker E: Guess wish we could play him more. [00:14:38] Speaker B: Parker, can you talk about the setup there? I guess MacArthur helped with the forecheck which led to the turnover. [00:14:46] Speaker F: Yeah, I mean it's kind of down to our systems. Like I was just going to the spot that our coaches preach to go to as F3 and their defense gave me a great pass right to me and I was just trying to throw it at the net as fast as I could. I saw Smitty was right there. I would say I wanted to keep it on the ice, but it went in the air and good skill play by Smitty to knock it in and it was pretty rewarding. Their kid played lights out today in goal, so to get one by him was pretty rewarding. Obviously not the outcome we wanted, but it was a good feeling. [00:15:20] Speaker B: It seemed like a lot of the. You had 39 shots in goal, but you could have had a lot more. A lot of shot for one time shanked a lot of one times also went wider than that. What do you got to do to correct that? [00:15:32] Speaker F: Yeah, I mean, we're a really skilled team. Like you look at our roster up and down, name wise, like we're one of the most skilled teams in our league right now. And I think it just comes down to our details, like the extra chances, the rebounds that after our first. First shot we gotta stop at for the net. We gotta stop after turnovers, myself included. Like there's little mistakes throughout the game that kind of hurt us. But overall, like our chances were there. [00:16:00] Speaker G: It's different and similar about playing here as opposed to messing with your kind. You guys have practiced here, but first actual game, you kind of compare and Contrasting? [00:16:14] Speaker E: Yeah, I mean, I think it's just. It just gives us more motivation, to be honest. There's more people in the building. It's louder. I mean, we had a good crowd of students there, which obviously all of us players love to see that our other athletes are coming to support us. So, yeah, I think it's just, I mean, super motivating. And I mean, I don't think our group's too worried. It stings, but I don't think our group's too worried about it going forward. [00:16:35] Speaker F: Yeah, I just say, like, new ranking compared to Mesa, this is professional stuff. Like the training here that we have now, our own gym, our nutrition that we get, it's top notch. Right now. The only thing I'd say is different. Like, you go to the away locker room at Mesa, it's hard to be an away team here. We give them nice stuff here for an away team too. So obviously our fans help us a ton, but this is a professional rink and people should want to come watch and want to come play here too. [00:17:05] Speaker G: Yeah, I was going to say with that in mind. All of that from a recruiting standpoint, bringing some heavy. Not to put down mess or anything like that. Let's bring kids in here, prospects and everything. Just kind of show them the layout, resources and everything. [00:17:20] Speaker F: Yeah, I mean, mess is history. Like, you can't take that away. But, like, we're here to build the future, you know? Like, you look at all of her posts on Instagram or Twitter, whatnot. What's our caption at the bottom? It's you before me. It's everybody. This is the future of Union Hockey. And, like, we want to be the start of that, that foundation. [00:17:40] Speaker B: Do you wish it wasn't a shootout in the Not Only Game? [00:17:43] Speaker F: What's that? [00:17:44] Speaker B: Do you wish it was not a shootout in the Not Only Game? Seemed like a waste of time. There's nothing gained. There's no points involved. [00:17:50] Speaker F: I mean, you can't even say that. Like, we're gonna. We're gonna be in shootouts in the ECA Seeds. Bound to happen. Like, it's practice. So. No, like, I. I do really like that we do a shootout in that situation because we're gonna learn. We're gonna see who we want to send out there, who not to send out there, like, give our goalie a chance to feel it out too. So, I mean, I think in this case, like, yeah, it ended in a tie, but going into a shootout was, like, really good for our team. What else can you guys learn from this? Game that kind of helped you guys building forward. [00:18:23] Speaker E: Just that, I mean, you gotta play a full 60 minutes. I mean, coming out slow like it's, it, it's gonna bite you. So I'd say that's the biggest learning point and I think everyone agrees. [00:18:37] Speaker B: Well, Josh, I thought Parker was gonna bite my head off asking what he must have thought. I was asking if a stupid question. But you could feel the passion he had in defending the shootout. [00:18:45] Speaker A: Yeah, he's, he's a great leader for us and someone, you know, that he's not afraid to voice his opinion if he thinks something. So I think the players really enjoy the shootouts and I think it's a chance for them to showcase, you know, their talent as well. [00:19:00] Speaker B: Well, Cameron Corpy got the starting goal for Union. The Michigan transfer made 25 saves. What did you think of his performance? [00:19:07] Speaker A: Yeah, I thought he was great. I thought he made, you know, basically every save he should and maybe one or two he shouldn't and you know, the one just kind of floats in there where he's screened and, you know, I feel really comfortable with him in the net and it's kind of nice. Just, I think he's got a real calming influence back there. [00:19:26] Speaker B: Well, Union played an exhibition game Sunday afternoon against Colgate in Clinton. Union lost Game 5 3. Of course, it doesn't mean anything and the standings are concerned. What did the team get out of the game? What did you get out of the game? [00:19:38] Speaker A: I thought it was, it was an outstanding game. You know, the other two goalies both played. They both did a nice job for us. You know, we played five lines, which is a little difficult to get the guys into the game because you're, you know, instead of, you know, playing every third or every fourth shift, now you're going every fifth for the forwards. And it can be a bit of a stretch from, you know, getting, getting on the ice, but a lot of good video. I thought the game was a little faster than the army game. So it put us under a little, little pressure. That arena is really small, no, virtually no neutral zone. So it was, it was a fast paced game and, you know, kind of got to get a lot of players in and get everyone involved, you know, Nice. You know, Troy Pelton as a first year player was able to score a goal. You know, someone who didn't play on Saturday and a couple other, you know, young guys got a lot of minutes. [00:20:32] Speaker B: Yeah, I mean, what was it like? You say it was not much of Nutri Zones. It almost sounds like the old Boston Garden or Chicago Stadium with how small those ice surfaces were back in the day. [00:20:43] Speaker A: Yeah, it's, it's an old school barn and you know, it was, it was a really cool place to play. And you know, there was, it was a great, you know, for a great cause. A young player in Clinton has cancer and all the proceeds went to him. So a lot of credit to Colgate and our players for, you know, playing hard for him and, you know, being able to generate some funds because that. [00:21:08] Speaker B: Game was originally scheduled to be played at, on Colgate's campus, but I think because the Colgate women were hosting Ohio State for a couple games that ended up switching things. [00:21:18] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:21:18] Speaker B: And that was supposed to be a Friday too. [00:21:20] Speaker A: Yeah, we were supposed to play that game Friday and then, you know, open up, which is the way we would have preferred it to be. But, you know, just that's the way it kind of, kind of worked. And obviously with, you know, us being able to generate some money for Gavin, it was, it was a great, great way to, you know, start our season. [00:21:40] Speaker B: I think that ring several years ago was the Kraft Hockeyville rank. When NBC was doing the NHL back then. I think they ended up playing, having I think the Buffalo Sabres and maybe Pittsburgh Penguins playing an exhibition game there. [00:21:53] Speaker A: Yeah, there were some pictures up. I believe it was Buffalo and Columbus. [00:21:56] Speaker B: Columbus. Okay. [00:21:57] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. So the locker rooms were, you know, very unique and just it's kind of funny to think that an NHL game would have been played there. [00:22:07] Speaker B: Yeah. Well, let's look ahead to this weekend. For the first time in program history, Union will be traveling to Erie, Pennsylvania to play a two game series against Nashville Mercyhurst. Friday's game's at 7:00pm and Saturday's contest starts at 5:00pm I mean, how much are you looking forward to getting out on the road for the first time this season in a regular season game? [00:22:25] Speaker A: Yeah, I think this is a great opportunity for us to really come together as a team and, you know, get to know each other a little bit better. And you know, there's been a lot of, a lot going on with just the new arena and just everything with the new group. So I think to be able to get on the road and, you know, spend some time, you know, we, we always do like a game night on Thursday night and just do some different things to really, you know, team build would be great for us. [00:22:51] Speaker B: Well, Merrill Sierras opened its season last weekend at Michigan and it was not a good, good for the Lakers. They lost both games by a combined 18 to nothing. So you might be facing a team that is very angry. [00:23:03] Speaker A: There's no question they got, you know, a unique situation with their, their head coach being in his final season and the coach and waiting being there. And I'm sure they're going to be, you know, working extra hard to get things corrected and, you know, it's their home opener and in his final season. So I think it'll be a good test for us. [00:23:23] Speaker B: Well, how important will it be for the Garner Chargers to jump on the Lakers early and control the game's tempo? [00:23:27] Speaker A: Yeah, I think for us that's, that's something we've been talking about all week, is starting on time because I thought both of our starts on the weekend weren't great. So it's an area we have to improve. And you know, when a team had a rough outing the weekend before, if you can put some doubt in their head right away, it'll be, it'd be good for us. [00:23:44] Speaker B: As you mentioned, Rick Godkin, the longtime head coach at Mercyhurst, one of the great guys in Kalachaki, announced during the off season that this will be his final season. Tom Petal will take over next season. What are your thoughts on Rick? [00:23:58] Speaker A: You know, a great coach, a great person, does things the right way, has fun with the game. He'll definitely be missed when he, he retires and honored we get to play him in his final season. [00:24:09] Speaker B: Great sense of humor, too. [00:24:10] Speaker A: Yes, he's. He's funny. [00:24:12] Speaker B: Well, a question I asked you on Tuesday at the media availability that I have heard from fans. Where is the 2014 NCAA championship banner? Because it's not right now. It's not hanging at the MT Bank Center. Yeah. [00:24:24] Speaker A: And I honestly at the time had no idea. And there, there's just in the process of kind of where they're gonna put that right now, but it will be up and we'll get that squared away. So appreciate everyone bringing that to our attention because like I said, I wasn't even aware. [00:24:41] Speaker B: Well, we'd like to take questions for our listeners and Union Bob 1 on X asks, what changes are you working on this weekend on the power play and in the lineup? [00:24:51] Speaker A: Well, I think, you know, the goal this weekend will be to, you know, get a lot of guys in as you know, in a couple exhibition games here, if we could get everybody to play a little bit would be. Would be the ideal situation as far as out of conference games, get those guys in. And I think like, we like our depth so we want to try to, you know, see if we can, you know, utilize that on the weekend. And you know, for us, I I think it's more about establishing an offensive identity. We've spent some time on our ozone play and regrouping pucks already this week trying to trying to correct that and just make sure we have a little bit of a backup game because I thought we were kind of one and done on the weekend and we just want to make sure we're possessing the puck and a lot of those similarities or similar changes will be with our power play. [00:25:37] Speaker B: Well, thank you Union Bob, and if you have a question for Josh, email them to me at Shot. That's S C H O t [email protected] or you can post them on Facebook on my personal page and the Parting Shots podcast page. You can also send them via bluesky X&threads and at Slap Shots. We'll do this again next week and we'll talk after the games this weekend. [00:26:24] Speaker A: Sounds great. [00:26:24] Speaker B: Thank you. That's Josh Howard.
