[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign. [00:00:03] Speaker B: The following program is brought to you. [00:00:05] Speaker C: In living color on elliot gazette.com or wherever you get your podcast. The Gazette News Group presents the Parting Shots podcast. Now here's your host, Gazette News Group sports editor Ken Shot. Thank you, Scott Keasy, and welcome to the Parting Shots podcast, available wherever you get your podcast. Subscribe today. Thanks for joining me from the Parting Shots podcast studio in Schenectady, New York. And it's year three of our podcast with Union meds head hockey coach Josh Housing, who begins his fourth season behind the bench for the Garden Chargers. Josh, welcome back. Can't believe the season's here already. [00:00:45] Speaker A: Yeah, it's good to be back, but yeah, it's, it's coming, coming pretty quick here. So looking forward to Saturday. [00:00:51] Speaker C: Yeah, I said, as I said here you begin your four season as a head coach. Starts Saturday when you host Army West Point in the men's first game in the new arena MNC Bank Center. How much do you love the new facility? [00:01:03] Speaker A: Yeah, everything's been outstanding. You know, every, every day when you get there, you're, you know, you can't believe that this is the building you get to come to work every day. So it's been, it's been fun. It's been a learning curve as far as just, you know, hey, how do the boards work? How do you know? How's the glass? Everything's first class, but it's been, you know, it's a unique building and trying to figure out, you know, how we can make it our home ice. [00:01:25] Speaker C: What's it like to have a window in your office? [00:01:28] Speaker A: It is nice. You know, you get the sun coming through and, you know, not something that I'm accustomed to. [00:01:33] Speaker C: Yeah, well, you've had, you had a chance to watch the Union women play the first game in the center last Friday against Franklin Pierce. How did you like the atmosphere? [00:01:42] Speaker A: Yeah, I thought it was outstanding. Good crowd for them and you could tell it gets pretty loud in there when, when anything good happens for us. So hopefully we're, we're giving people a lot of reasons to cheer. [00:01:52] Speaker C: Well, I mean, they drew a combined 1100 fans, which I think has got to be a record for them drawing that many fans. So, I mean, there was a lot of excitement. And you know, personally for me, 29 years of an end zone press box, now I get to sit on the side for the first time covering Union home game. But that'll be a lot of fun. Well, is, let me ask you this question. Is the walk to Starbucks to get your coffee a Lot shorter now than it was at Mesa. [00:02:14] Speaker A: Yeah, no question. It's, it's just right across the parking lot and. Yeah, just, it's, it's great to have all the, all the restaurants and just everything, you know, down with the, you know, the harbor and just, you know, being able to go on, walk on the path right next to the river. If you need a five minute break. [00:02:31] Speaker C: I was just telling Teddy Nado on the Tuesday conference call with the coaches. He, I know he's a big Duncan guy and I told him there's walking distance to get a Duncan. So he's excited but. Well, of course. The Cardinal Chargers are coming off their highest finish since the 201718 season. Union placed fourth in the ECAC hockey standings and earned a first round bye. Unfortunately for Union, Dartmouth swept the best of three quarterfinals. The team was picked to finish fifth in the ECAC coaches preseason four, which came out last week. It's the first time in four years, your four years, that Union was picked that high. Are you pleased with that prediction or doesn't it matter? [00:03:06] Speaker A: I mean, yeah, it really doesn't matter. I think it's, you know, it's better to be fifth than what, I don't know what year. I think we were eighth the year before in the last couple years. [00:03:14] Speaker C: Yeah, I think eighth the last, all three years prior. [00:03:17] Speaker A: So hopefully people are thinking we're, you know, trending in a positive direction. We think, you know, the players we have coming in are, are great and we, we really like this team. But you know, I think I said this to you before, but if we finish in fifth, I think that'll be a disappointment for us. [00:03:31] Speaker C: Well, let's talk about this season squad. I think there are three keys that will determine the team's fate and I wrote about that in my opening facelift column that appeared in Wednesday's print edition as well as the DailyGazette.com website. I want to start with the goalie situation. Kyle Chauvett, who was the team's number one goaltender the last two seasons, transferred to New Hampshire. You brought in three goalies. Cameron Korpi, the brother of Union senior Carter Korpi, and, and we'll talk about those two in a moment. Cameron came from Michigan via the transfer portal. The others are freshmen Braden Gillespie and Brendan Holohan. Gillespie comes from the Branton Steelheads of the Ontario Hockey League, the first Canadian major junior player to join Union. And Holohan split time last season with the North American Hockey Leagues, New Mexico Ice Wolves and El Paso Rhinos. Nice Nicknames. How important will it be to have the goalie situation settled early? [00:04:22] Speaker A: Yeah, I think they've all done a nice job coming in, and I think our guys feel really comfortable with all three of them, just with their work ethic and their ability to stop pucks in practice. And, you know, I think all three of them are going to, you know, push to make each other better. And it's nice to have the group we do. [00:04:40] Speaker C: I mean, can you say Cameron Corporate is the number one goalie heading into the game Saturday? [00:04:44] Speaker A: Yeah, I mean, I think he's, you know, again, the one that has the proven history and the experience and, you know, he's big and he's athletic and, you know, he makes the game at times seem really, really simple. But I've been really impressed with, you know, Gillespie and Holohan just. And their ability to compete for pucks and continue to push. And, you know, you can tell that they want to try to get in the net and they want to earn it. But at this point, Cam's going to. Cam's going to start on Saturday for us. [00:05:15] Speaker C: Okay, well, let's talk about the Korpiza. I mean, how much fun will it be for the brothers to be on the same team? And in talking with them on Tuesday at the availability, they said this will be the first time they're playing organized hockey together. I was surprised about that. How much fun do you think it'll be for them to play together this season? [00:05:31] Speaker A: Yeah, I think, you know, you. You grow up and, you know, you probably shoot on your brother, you know, a million times growing up as a kid, but, you know, you never get the opportunity to play with them. And I think this will be. Be pretty special for them and, you know, something that their whole family will, you know, definitely cherish and take advantage of. [00:05:47] Speaker C: Well, Carter said to me that one of the basement games they play together, Cameron got him with a stick and got a scar. [00:05:56] Speaker A: Yeah, that doesn't surprise me at all. [00:05:59] Speaker C: Well, talk about the process of getting Cameron to commit to union. When he entered the transfer portal, did you go after him right away? [00:06:06] Speaker A: Yeah, I mean, we called the day he went in and it was, you know, Carter actually came into our office and told us he was going to go in that day, and we were just kind of waiting for it to pop up on you. Just kept hitting refresh. And I believe we were the first people to call him. And we just, you know, expressed our interest and said that, you know, we really wanted him to be a part of it and understand he Would have a lot of phone calls. But, you know, when we're, when he was making his decision, we were hoping we were going to be in the final couple and you know, luckily enough for us, we were. And then, you know, it was, there was a few schools that he was debating on and we were lucky enough that he picked us. [00:06:44] Speaker C: Did you consult with Carter at all during the process? [00:06:47] Speaker A: Yeah, we talked on a, on a pretty regular basis. You know, for us, we always talk to our guys about, you know, bringing in the right type of people and, you know, wanting to have, you know, guys in the locker room that they want to be a part of it. And it was a unique thing for Carter because I don't think he wanted to say too much one, because he was, you know, friends with Kyle and classmates with Kyle and you know, didn't know how that would all handle but, or how it all shake out. But you know, at the end of the day we told him we were going after, after Cameron and, and we're hoping for his support and blessing and he was right there with us, helping. [00:07:24] Speaker C: What do you like about Cameron's game? [00:07:26] Speaker A: Yeah, like you said, he's, he's extremely big and he six four. Yeah. Takes up so much of the net. He makes the game at times look really, really simple. Just like, you know, like he, he's not scrambling, he's. He's not all over. And I think that's, you know, he's composed, he uses his arms and legs very well. But like when he's stretched out and kind of scrambling, like maybe some goalies, that's how they thrive. That's not, you know, that's not his game. He's going to, he's going to be composed. And again, I think if you're going to watch him and be like, that looks easy like. And it is for him. [00:08:03] Speaker C: His goals against average with Michigan last season was 3.06, but he had a 9.04 save percentage. Was the goals against average a reflection of Michigan that had one of the worst scoring defenses in college hockey last season? [00:08:15] Speaker A: You know, like, we don't watch, we watch kind of the shots and just kind of the goals he gave up and you know, some of them were, you know, challenging. But I think, you know, he's just, he's just trying to survive and he was a first year goaltender and trying to figure it out last year. So I think, you know, some of it is, is him learning the process and some of it is just. Yeah, again, like if you're giving up two on ones, it's, you know, you're going to give up a few more goals. Michigan has an unbelievable ability to create offense, and I think something they really take a ton of pride in. So I think that's where it gets a little bit different, is that they just. They're okay exchanging chances because they think they're going to be on the better end of it. [00:08:57] Speaker C: In speaking with Cameron, he said he called you first to say he was committing to Union, and then he told his brother. How exciting was it to get that phone call and. And how exciting was it? [00:09:08] Speaker A: Well, it was something that we didn't know was gonna happen because it was like, if we felt like it was trending that way, but then, you know, until you get the call, you know, it's just like. It's like the worst thing sometimes is recruiting, is that somebody's 90% of the way there because, you know, as close as they are, it means they're 10% not in. So it was. It was a big relief. It was one of those things where, you know, we felt like, okay, we're in a really good spot now, getting them. [00:09:34] Speaker C: Just briefly talk about the other goaltenders. [00:09:36] Speaker A: Yeah, so, you know, Braden Gillespie, he's really. He's. He's going to be a little bit more aggressive, a little bit more, you know, having the ability to take things away from side to side. Just with his. His skating ability, like, that's kind of. [00:09:51] Speaker C: It's. [00:09:51] Speaker A: It's a little bit different. He's really good at playing the puck. He's. He's composed in there. He's very, again, very, very competitive and, you know, excited about him. And then, you know, Brendan is, again, a big goaltender. He's going to be a little bit more, you know, back in his net and composed. Really, like, he's been a really big surprise is how good he is. You know, at the time, we didn't know where he would fit in. Got him a little bit late when actually he couldn't get into army and, you know, with medical clearance, couldn't get through. So a great addition for us and an unbelievable human being. [00:10:28] Speaker C: Well, let's talk about a couple other keys. I think what for Union B have a successful season, you got to find ways to beat Quinnipiac and Dartmouth. Quinnipiac has been a thorn in Union side for many years. The Garner Chargers are winless in 11 straight against the Bobcats, including 10 consecutive losses. Meanwhile, Dartmouth has become a recent pain. The Garner Chargers have lost the last seven games against the Big Green, and Dartmouth has Eliminated Union in the EC Acockee tournament quarter quarterfinals the last two seasons. How important will it be for Union to snap those skids? [00:10:58] Speaker A: Yeah, you know, if we want to advance, we, you know, and win the ecac, you're going to have to beat Quinnipiac, you're going to have to beat Dartmouth. And that's been, you know, something that we struggled with a little bit. I think this team is geared up and ready for those challenges and you know, we got a long time until we play them but you know, it's, it's one step at a time and you know, for us to continue to get better and Army's our first test and you know, I, it's tough to say because we're not really looking past them, but like it's definitely. Those are, those are games that are, you know, I guess got little earmarks on the calendar. [00:11:33] Speaker C: Well, the team captain, Nick Young mentioned during my interview with him on Tuesday that when he was a freshman, Union got rocked by Cornell 10 to 1 over at Liner Rank. And then last season, Union ended up sweeping Cornell. Is that something that could inspire by our Union against Quinnipiac and Dartmouth? [00:11:48] Speaker A: Yeah, I think, you know, it's. Every year's a little bit different and this group, you know, there's 11 guys that have no idea about anything with Dartmouth and Quinnipiac right now. So I think, you know, some of those guys are going to make a difference for us and I think they, when you see them here on Saturday, you know that they'll definitely help us and compete with those teams. [00:12:11] Speaker C: My last key is the scoring. The Gardner Chargers averaged 3.11 goals per game last season. That was tied for fourth in EC with Cornell and tied for 20th in the country with Michigan. Union has four of its top five scorers back. Senior forward's Colby MacArthur, Brandon Burr and Nate Hanley and sophomore forward Ben Muthersbaugh. Sophomore forward's Lucas Buziel and Riley Brueck improved as the season progressed. And then Carter Korpi, now a senior, he's back in the lineup after he suffered a season ending torn meniscus in the January 3rd game at Brown. You added a high scoring freshman in Alex Lorenza, who was the second leading scorer in the North American Hockey League with 35 goals and 46 assists for the Austin Bruins. How important will it be for Union to keep the offense going? [00:12:58] Speaker A: Yeah, I think for us like we want to play a puck possession game where we're making plays with speed and we want to get everybody involved. And for us to be successful. We got to score with depth and that includes our defense. And I think that's an area where we have some defensemen this year that will really be able to jump up and make plays for us offensively. [00:13:18] Speaker C: Well, let's take a break. We'll talk more with Josh when we return. You're listening to the Parting Shots podcast. [00:13:30] Speaker B: It's the most historic conference in college hockey. It's a battle night in and night out. You ECAC Hockey, an iconic conference, home to 12 of the most prestigious universities and programs in the world and showcasing the best student athletes in the sport. Top notch facilities and arenas, incomparable traditions, passionate fans, alumni who go on to become elite professionals, leaders and champions. ECAC hockey, there's no experience like it. You're listening to the Parting Shots podcast with Daily Gazette sports editor Jim Shaw. [00:15:00] Speaker C: Welcome back to the podcast. It's the season debut of the Union College men's hockey coach Josh Halge's weekly appearance here on the podcast. Well, besides Cameron Corpi, Josh, you picked up four other players from the transfer portal. Defenseman Will Felicio from Michigan, teammate Cameron's there. Defenseman Carter Rose from Clarkson, defenseman Tyler Dunbar from Colorado College and forward Luke Buss from Wisconsin. Give us a breakdown of those players. [00:15:26] Speaker A: Yeah, I think they all bring a little bit something different. You know, Will has the ability to, to create at a very, very high level. He's extremely gifted with the puck, a ton of poise, a ton of confidence. And you know, I've been really surprised with how well he can defend. You know, he for, for under 20 players or under 20 year old players. Last year he put up some extremely impressive numbers for goals for and goals against just per minute. And he's someone that is a ton of fun to watch. Tyler Dunbar, he does a little bit of everything. He can make plays offensively. He's really good defensively, somebody that we'll rely on in all situations and somebody that will come in and have a little bit of leadership as well. And then Carter Rose is a hard nosed defender, skates extremely well, can close space quickly. I think he can chip in a little bit offensively but we're going to be, you know, focusing on him to be a, you know, a shutdown type defender for us and something that I think he'll take a ton of pride in. Luke Buss is someone that can score. He's got the ability to finish if he's given a little bit of space. But the one thing that I've been really impressed with just is, you know, how much he raises our battle level in practice. I think him and Carter do a really good job of competing and, you know, raising that level for us as transfers. [00:16:53] Speaker C: I mentioned Carter Korpi earlier. He suffered that torment meniscus in the January 3rd game at Brown. How big is it to have him back? Because he's especially dangerous on the penalty kill is when it's shorthanded goals. [00:17:05] Speaker A: Yeah, I think, you know, he's one of those guys where if he gets a chance and he's in a loan like we feel like it's automatic. He's got that kind of ability. But he also can play physical. He plays hard. He's willing to sacrifice like you see on the penalty kill and get to, you know, get to that shot lane and wear one for his teammates. So I'm excited to have him back. [00:17:25] Speaker C: Nick Young takes over as captain. Senior defenseman will be assisted by Brandon Burr and Parker Lindauer. Young was an alternate captain last season. How strong of a captain will he be? [00:17:35] Speaker A: Yeah, he'll, you know, he's someone that when he got here on campus, I think everybody knew he was going to wear a letter for us and be the captain at some point. At some point. So I think he's ready for this. This is kind of his time. This is, you know, his team. And we'll, we'll lead or he'll lead us and we'll go as far as he'll, he'll take us. [00:17:54] Speaker C: Yeah, I was interested. Burr and Lindau are both transfers coming in so I mean, to see them get the A's, what does that mean? [00:18:01] Speaker A: Yeah, I think they came in right away and earned the respect of the room and you know, I think anytime you have people coming from other programs as well, it can, it can put a little different perspective on it. And I think they're grateful to be here and they're grateful to lead and you know, really excited about the steps that they can take for us. [00:18:20] Speaker C: Well, looking at the schedule, the team will play a 36 game regular season schedule. That's two more than normal and that's because Union is playing in the Friendship Four tournament in Belfast, Northern Ireland November 28th and 29th. Union faces Sacred Heart on the 28th, then either RIT or Miami of Ohio on the 29th. How much are you looking forward to that? [00:18:39] Speaker A: Yeah, I think it's a, you know, like a life changing trip as far as being able to go and you know, see how another, another group of people live and just how different, different the world is there. And you know, for us, we get to be a part of going to their schools and be a part of their community for, for a week and it's so much fun. It's a, it's a great trip and we're, we're extremely excited to be a part of it. [00:19:00] Speaker C: Well, some Saturday home games this season will be at 5pm instead of 4pm why was that change made? [00:19:07] Speaker A: Well, this podcast, a little bit, you know, we just kind of looked at it and you know, for some of the numbers suggested we were a little bit better when we played after, after five and but also I think with the new building it allows people to, you know, if you want to come in and have dinner at the rink, you have that ability. If you want to come in and just have a, have a drink and then go to dinner after, you have that ability with all the restaurants and options around, you know, around the area. So I think the new building, it'll be great for fans. [00:19:32] Speaker C: Well, speaking of, you mentioned eating at the dinner at the Ring. There's many concession stands, plenty of bathrooms, plenty of parking. How I just, I think that's what I, you know, press box. Yeah, number one for me. But now you don't have to worry. Have lines. Bathroom lines anymore or concession stand lines anymore. [00:19:53] Speaker A: Yeah, I think it's sort of funny when anybody, I'm giving a visit or a tour or two, I show them the bathrooms which I, you know, why would you do that? But like if you, if you, you know, rat Messa and you realize like the limitations the building had, it's, it's a completely different venue and obviously we're gonna miss Messa and everything about it, but this is this is special worth where we're at now. [00:20:17] Speaker C: It seems like the noise in there, some people have complained a little bit. Maybe it's too loud. They can't understand the pa. But just because I think that was the one thing a lot of fans were worried about, maybe some of the players were worried about. And then talking with alums years ago when they about of new ran because they didn't want to leave because the way mess it was and the way the noise echoed off the ceiling. It's loud in there. I mean, how intimidating can that be for an opposite. An opponent. Opposing opponent, opposing team. [00:20:45] Speaker A: Yeah, I think. I think it has the ability to be an extremely difficult place to play for for whoever we're playing. And the fans are. They're right on top of you. Like the seats go up and down and it's. You know, you're not. You're. No matter what seat you're in, you're not far away from the action. And yeah, it's. It. It was fun to watch a game and. But I'm even more excited to be on the bench and see what it's like with a, you know, a packed house. And I think that's kind of what we're expecting on Saturday. [00:21:14] Speaker C: Well, I'm thinking about Quinnipiac. Their arena is M and T Bank Arena. [00:21:17] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:21:18] Speaker C: You're M and T Bank Center. Do we have the M and T Bank cup between Union and Quinnipiac? Would you be up for that? [00:21:24] Speaker A: Yeah, I mean, I up for anything and you know, I think that that would be something if we could get that sponsored. I think that's a great idea. [00:21:33] Speaker C: Well, one interesting game that we played at the M and T Bank center takes place on Saturday, November 15th. That's when Kyle Chavet comes to town with his new team, New Hampshire. I mean, how much. And not looking ahead right now, but how much fun will that be to have Kyle back in Schenectady? [00:21:47] Speaker A: Yeah, you know, he's a great person and you know, someone that wore the jersey for three years. So, you know, we're excited to play against him and compete against him, but you know, more importantly, just, you know, shake his hand and say hello. He's got a great parents and, you know, great family. So obviously we'll miss him this year, but, you know, he had to do what he felt was best for his career and, you know, we'll welcome him back. But more, it's my son's birthday too, so great day as well. [00:22:15] Speaker C: That's great. So get a win for him too. So, I mean, you know, Kyle's from New Hampshire, so it sort of made sense for him to, you know, go to New Hampshire and first senior season. So, as I mentioned, the Opening Union is facing Army West Point at 5pm Saturday. The Black Knights have a new head coach in Zach McKelvey, and he's going to be on Thursday's podcast. It marks the end of an era as there won't be a member of the Riley family as a head coach. 75 years. What do you think? What do you know about Zach? [00:22:41] Speaker A: Actually, you know, he's from Minnesota, so we're just a couple years apart. So grew up and know his. Know his family. They're a good, great hockey family. And I think he'll do an amazing job. You know, wishing him a ton of success, just not for his first one. [00:22:57] Speaker C: What do you expect from army on Saturday? [00:22:59] Speaker A: Yeah, I think, you know what you're going to get when you play Army. They're going to compete extremely hard. They're going to be physical, they're going to defend. They have a great goaltender. They have a lot of guys that are back that have scored for them. So they'll have a veteran team with a lot of experience. [00:23:12] Speaker C: Well, there was some shocking conference news in August when Keith Elaine abruptly resigned as Yale head coach. Joe Howe will be the interim head coach this season. Elaine led the Bulldogs to the 2013 NCAA title. Did that news catch you by surprise? [00:23:26] Speaker A: Yeah, I think anytime a change happens that late, you're definitely caught off guard with it, you know, not surprised that Joe got the opportunity here to, you know, to lead the team. I think he's a great young hockey guy and we'll see what. See what he can do. But, you know, it's always disappointing when, you know, a legend like Keith steps away. But, you know, he's been doing it for so long. [00:23:46] Speaker C: Understand it just the timing of it just seemed weird. When I was down in Philly visiting my mom and I saw the press release, my first, and I thought it was one of those, he's going to resign at the end here, like Mike Schaefer did last season. And then I reread it. I was like, oh, he's resigning now. So there's. Something just doesn't seem right about us. It seemed like either he was forced out or he wanted something and wasn't getting it and decided that's it. [00:24:10] Speaker A: Yeah, the only thing I could think of besides if something like that happened was that just the way the transfer portal works. You know, if he would have left a Couple months earlier, everybody, you know, could leave, but that late, you know, maybe it allowed for everybody to, you know, stay and to not lose any players. And then also it gave Joe the opportunity to, you know, have that interim title for a year. So, you know, instead of. If you. If you do it in April, then, you know, there's a big search and maybe he doesn't get that opportunity. [00:24:39] Speaker C: Yeah, well, I've been a proponent of the ECAC hockey referees being miked so that the fans and media knows what they are reviewing on video challenges or even announcing the penalties. They do it in the NCAA tournament, and I believe most of the other conferences do it. So where do you stand on that? [00:24:54] Speaker A: Yeah, I think at least this year they have come with a little bit of announcing that there's a challenge and what the challenge is for as far from the announcer, but I don't think it'll be coming from the ref. So hopefully we see that happen this year. [00:25:07] Speaker C: Yeah, we like to take questions from our listeners and Jim Calonne, who often sends us questions, has a couple. Were you surprised by the departure of Kyle? [00:25:17] Speaker A: Yeah, maybe a little bit. I think that he was looking for, you know, a guarantee that he'd be the guy. And, you know, at the time, we. We weren't prepared to do that. So at the same point I was surprised, but I also wasn't. [00:25:32] Speaker C: Was it a scramble rebuilding the goalie corps other than having Korpi signed? [00:25:36] Speaker A: No, not really. You know, we were patient with the timing and making sure we got the guys we felt were right. But I thought, you know, I thought our staff, they. I thought they hit a home run with the guys we got. [00:25:46] Speaker C: I know this will be your first game Saturday, but I'll ask this question because you were there for the women's game. Has the new rink location off campus affected that home ice feeling? [00:25:54] Speaker A: Not at all. From the women's game. I thought it was very well attended and I mean, judging by, you know, our ticket sales right now, I think, you know, hoping to see a bunch of students out. I don't know where that will be, but, you know, a lot of people will be there. [00:26:08] Speaker C: Well, thanks, Jim.
